Beaches In And Around Nerja

February 18, 2014 by RentInNerja Leave a Comment

Nerja is a thriving town situated in the Malaga region of the Costs Del Sol in Southern Spain and is renowned for its spectacular beaches.  They are listed here to aid those of you that are travelling to Nerja for your holidays.

Burriana (Blue Flag)

Also known as Playa Burriana this large sandy beach is perhaps the most visited and is a regular recipient of the ‘Blue Flag’ which means it is recognised by the European Union as a high quality and safe beach for bathing, it also has many facilities for its many visitors and is located at the east end of the town.

Calahonda

This is a relatively small beach which is situated very close the the very popular Balcon De Europa, which is a beautiful esplanade and is the focal point of this lovely town.  Access to the beach is via a slightly descending and twisting walkway just to the left of the Balcon if you’re facing it, beneath the ‘aqueduct’ style wall. The beach itself is sandy, and quite well sheltered.  Being close to the Balcon there are a good choice of restaurants and bars also. There are sun beds here.

A small cove is to the east of this beach called Playa Chorillo.

Carabeillo

The Carabeillo beach is located between the Burriana and Carabeo beaches and is another fairly small beach.  There is however a drawback with this beach, and that is to gain access to it there are over 100 steps to negotiate, so it is not suitable for those with mobility problems and if refreshments are required it is quite a long trudge up and down the steps.  So it might be a good idea to take your own drinks and food instead.

Carabeo

Carabeo beach is also a fine sandy beach that extends to approximately 100 metres in length and 20 metres in width.  Similar to the Carabeillo beach it has steps that take you down to it and again is not particularly suitable for those that have problems with mobility.  Facilities include a kiosk for refreshments, toilets and showers.

El Chucho

Located close to the Torrecilla beach, El Chucho has a very attractive promenade that was built in 2010.  This great beach extends to over 250 metres in length is very clean and when entering the sea there is no steep shelf to negotiate so making this beach ideal for children to bathe in and also more family orientated.  The facilities include Sunbeds, Toilets, Refreshments and a Lifeguard in the summer months.

El Playazo

Located on the western side of the town, this is the longest beach in Nerja and as yet is undeveloped.  This is not a sandy beach and is composed mainly of shingle (small stones), however it is still a very popular beach for sunbathers and swimmers.  There is also a children’s play area available.  Other facilities include Toilets, Showers, Warning Signals, Bars, Restaurants, Sunbeds and a Summer Lifeguard.

El Salón

Located just west of the Balcon, you can access this small 200m long, 20m wide dark sandy beach by following signs to the Cochran’s bar from the Balcon. Facing the El Salvador church, there is a small walkway to your left. This beach includes amenities such as showers, first aid (see operating hours below), disabled access, sunbeds and a little shop. There’s always a few little boats parked up on the beach which gives a great nautical feel! From here you will see the boats travelling to and from Malaga and also the parasailer coming across from Burriana!

There is another cove closer to the Balcon also – this also has sun beds. Nice and quiet, but central too!

La Torrecilla (Blue Flag)

Located on the western side of town, this is the first beach after Playa El Salon, at the bottom of Calle Castilla Perez is where you can access it, as well as various entry points if you keep walking west. This is a very popular and well loved Nerja beach and includes amenities such as disabled facilities, toilets, showers, sunbeds, life guards and first aid in summer (12 – 8pm, 15th June – 15th September), parking, public transport, and restaurants. A beautiful promenade runs all the way from the front of Las Fuentes de Nerja, all the way down to Playa El Playazo – very popular with runners, cyclists and walkers.

Enjoy your stay in this superb Spanish resort!

Nerja

Nerja is on the seashore approximately 45-50 kilometres from Malaga and is situated near to a busy coastal highway, in the Costa del Sol region of Spain.  This beautiful Spanish town started out as an old sleepy fishing village years ago, but has now a population in excess of 20,000 people, and is a thriving Spanish tourist attraction receiving many visitors from worldwide destinations.  The beaches around the Nerja area extend to over 15 kilometres in length and whichever beach you choose to visit you will always have great views of the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.

In the heart of Nerja there is the amazing Balcon de Europa or  (Balcony of Europe), a superb promenade area that runs along the edge of a high cliff, previously the site of an old Moorish castle, that provides magnificent panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and lovely beach area below, all set within a totally awesome backdrop made up of the Almijara mountains. Another brilliant Nerja attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, located just a few kilometres from the town centre. The caves themselves include many historic treasures such as paintings which are thousand’s of years old and other eclectic mixes of pre-historic remains. One of the biggest of these natural caverns has actually been transformed into a concert hall unbelievably, where many different performances are staged during the summer months. Each summer Nerja celebrates an International Cave Festival, with the participation of many top international artists and entertainers.  All in all an exceptional place for a holiday to suit any age group.

About Nerja

Nerja image

Nerja is the largest resort on the eastern Costa del Sol and is a popular holiday destination for young and old alike. It boasts of having the best climate in the entire region, having more days of sunshine than anywhere else in Europe. This one time fishing village, found some 45 minutes east of Malaga airport, is not only surrounded by impressive mountain scenery of the Sierra Almijara, but also has amazing views of the Mediterranean. Nerja has resisted the stereotypical Costa del Sol developments in favour of a more traditional and relaxed atmosphere in a picturesque Andalucian environment, retaining its original charm and character.

Nerja has been awarded almost every year with the “Town Caring” prize from the “Junta de Andalucía” assuring both tourists and locals that a continuous effort is made from the Town Hall to keep all the beaches clean, as well as keeping to a strict guideline for all developments ensuring all Villa’s and apartments are to within a high standard and no more than 3 storeys high. Due to this, Nerja is classed as one of the best kept secrets of the Costa del Sol, having kept its ambience and quiet enchantment feel of the old Moorish town yet has all the local amenities one would require from a city.

The popularity has increased year on year due to cheap airfares and the completion of the freeway, which has brought trade and income to the locals. During the past 6 years property has boomed, nearly doubling in value of which many investors bought to rent to holiday makers, making Nerja a hugely popular holiday location and as a result there are many excellent villas and apartments to choose from.

In the Old Town, there are plenty of small shops who offer local craftworks and products of the area, including sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. There are plenty of excellent restaurants and bars in and around town to suit all tastes, including the local beach restaurants, famous for their daily catch of fresh fish, some with views of the Balcon de Europa, Playa El Calahonda and El Chorrillo beaches. The winding cobbled streets lead you to something different with each corner you turn.

One of the main attractions is the Balcon De Europa (which was constructed around 1487 and named by King Alfonso XII on a visit in 1885), which offers a palm lined promenade leading to a Former 9th Century Castle, which is now a spectacular viewpoint carved out of the rocky headland above the sea. Here you can relax in one of the bars that surround the square or wander down to one of the coved beaches that lie below the headland. To the side of the Balcón, you will find the 17th Century El Salvador Church, constructed in baroque-mudejar style, where you may witness one of the many Spanish weddings that take place here over the course of the summer.

There are a number of streets to walk around, lots of stalls and various restaurants and bars to visit in the area. There is also a street market in Frigiliana every Thursday.

Above the area of Burriana Beach are the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa, where you will find lush tropical gardens which descend down towards the beach.

Nerja’s most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly the Caves of Nerja (Cueves de Nerja). Discovered by five young people from Maro in 1959, it was then opened to the public in the following year. Here you will find paintings of animals and humans dating some 20,000 years old, together with pre-historic remains. The hall of Bethlehem is an amazing site with its stalagmites and stalactites, one of which is the largest on the world. The stalagmite and stalactite meet in the middle of the cave and measures an incredible 32 metres. The largest of the caverns is known as the Hall of the Waterfall, which has been transformed into a magnificent concert hall where many performances are conducted throughout the summer. Located just 3 kilometres outside of Nerja, this is a must for the holiday enthusiast.
