Nerja is a thriving town situated in the Malaga region of the Costs Del Sol in Southern Spain and is renowned for its spectacular beaches. They are listed here to aid those of you that are travelling to Nerja for your holidays.
Burriana (Blue Flag)
Also known as Playa Burriana this large sandy beach is perhaps the most visited and is a regular recipient of the ‘Blue Flag’ which means it is recognised by the European Union as a high quality and safe beach for bathing, it also has many facilities for its many visitors and is located at the east end of the town.
Calahonda
This is a relatively small beach which is situated very close the the very popular Balcon De Europa, which is a beautiful esplanade and is the focal point of this lovely town. Access to the beach is via a slightly descending and twisting walkway just to the left of the Balcon if you’re facing it, beneath the ‘aqueduct’ style wall. The beach itself is sandy, and quite well sheltered. Being close to the Balcon there are a good choice of restaurants and bars also. There are sun beds here.
A small cove is to the east of this beach called Playa Chorillo.
Carabeillo
The Carabeillo beach is located between the Burriana and Carabeo beaches and is another fairly small beach. There is however a drawback with this beach, and that is to gain access to it there are over 100 steps to negotiate, so it is not suitable for those with mobility problems and if refreshments are required it is quite a long trudge up and down the steps. So it might be a good idea to take your own drinks and food instead.
Carabeo
Carabeo beach is also a fine sandy beach that extends to approximately 100 metres in length and 20 metres in width. Similar to the Carabeillo beach it has steps that take you down to it and again is not particularly suitable for those that have problems with mobility. Facilities include a kiosk for refreshments, toilets and showers.
El Chucho
Located close to the Torrecilla beach, El Chucho has a very attractive promenade that was built in 2010. This great beach extends to over 250 metres in length is very clean and when entering the sea there is no steep shelf to negotiate so making this beach ideal for children to bathe in and also more family orientated. The facilities include Sunbeds, Toilets, Refreshments and a Lifeguard in the summer months.
El Playazo
Located on the western side of the town, this is the longest beach in Nerja and as yet is undeveloped. This is not a sandy beach and is composed mainly of shingle (small stones), however it is still a very popular beach for sunbathers and swimmers. There is also a children’s play area available. Other facilities include Toilets, Showers, Warning Signals, Bars, Restaurants, Sunbeds and a Summer Lifeguard.
El Salón
Located just west of the Balcon, you can access this small 200m long, 20m wide dark sandy beach by following signs to the Cochran’s bar from the Balcon. Facing the El Salvador church, there is a small walkway to your left. This beach includes amenities such as showers, first aid (see operating hours below), disabled access, sunbeds and a little shop. There’s always a few little boats parked up on the beach which gives a great nautical feel! From here you will see the boats travelling to and from Malaga and also the parasailer coming across from Burriana!
There is another cove closer to the Balcon also – this also has sun beds. Nice and quiet, but central too!
La Torrecilla (Blue Flag)
Located on the western side of town, this is the first beach after Playa El Salon, at the bottom of Calle Castilla Perez is where you can access it, as well as various entry points if you keep walking west. This is a very popular and well loved Nerja beach and includes amenities such as disabled facilities, toilets, showers, sunbeds, life guards and first aid in summer (12 – 8pm, 15th June – 15th September), parking, public transport, and restaurants. A beautiful promenade runs all the way from the front of Las Fuentes de Nerja, all the way down to Playa El Playazo – very popular with runners, cyclists and walkers.
Enjoy your stay in this superb Spanish resort!
