Historic Nerja
Historic Nerja
Along my journeys, I have come across many historic sights in Nerja! Here I add them as I find them – so do please enjoy! And if you’re able to go and find these treats, I urge you to do so
Chanquete’s Boat
One of Nerja’s iconic views. The boat featured in Antonio Mercer’s television series: ‘Verano Azul’ (Blue Summer) which was filmed in Nerja! The boat ‘La Dorada I’ was the home of the old sea dog Chanquete. Go see it in person if you haven’t already! It’s in the Verano Azul Park and pays homage to the cast and crew who took part in creating a wonderful story and capturing the charm and charisma of Nerja
La Torrecilla
Meaning ‘The Little Tower’ in English, the ruins of this tower are located on the headland of Torrecilla between Playa La Torrecilla and Playa El Playazo (it’s like a mini Balcon!). It’s probable that this location was first used in connection with the coastal watch line designed by the nazaries, however the remains correspond to a later building, constructed in the 17th century to front the raids of the berberiscues pirates! (Arrrgh!)
During the war of Interdependency, it was blown up by the English, then allies to Spain to stop it being used by the French Army
Balcon de Europa
We dedicate this blog to one of the most beautiful viewing points in all of Europe. None other than the ‘Balcon de Europa’ situated in the nerve centre of Nerja! This is a favourite site for visitors and local people – it definitely took my breath away when I first saw it, and that was at night time!
The beautiful, palm tree lined promenade walks you out towards the Mediterranean whilst passing white-washed Andalucian arches on one side with bars and restaurants opposite
The very end/viewing point is a large, semi-circular ‘Balcony’ with panoramic sea views and mountains. Being here during sunset will be truly unforgettable, not only the views – but the atmosphere and general energy bouncing amongst many, all enjoying the moment
History of the Balcon de Eurpa
A popular photo opportunity amongst so many, are the two cannons located either side of the viewpoint. These are historical reminders of the fortress that used to sit upon the cliffs until 1812.
Pictured, is King Alfonso XII – very popular amongst the tourists. After all – why wouldn’t you have your picture taken while on the famous pier, with an incredible scene behind you and the King acting as your selfie partner?! You’d be mad not to…
King Alfonso XII was King of Spain, reigning from 1874 to 1885 who visited Nerja on the 12th January 1885 and gave the name of the Balcon de Europa – well did you know that?! The sculpture was erected in February 2003 by F. Martin. Later that year, the King died and left his unborn son to reign a year later
So if you’re making plans to visit Nerja soon – this is an obvious and unmissable attraction, make the most of it, enjoy and take lots of pictures!
If you’re not planning to visit Nerja soon, then DO!
Some pictures I took below – August 2014
Nerja for Beginners
A good and sunny afternoon to you all! If you are reading this having been to Nerja, you’ll be a complete ‘know-it-all’ however if you’re contemplating a visit, here are some simple facts about Nerja!
Nerja itself, is located in the easternmost part of the Malaga province. The closest towns are Torrox and Frigiliana which both border Nerja. You will find the quiet Punta Lara located between Torrox and west Nerja. You can then find Competa to the north while Granada (Almunecar) lies east.
Nerja welcomes the beautiful Mediterranean onto it’s nine beaches (and it’s climate!). The beaches come is all variates, small, medium, large, remote or central. Nerja also hosts the Playa Burriana which is a ‘Blue Flag’ beach meaning many water sports and beach activities inclusive of paragliding and volley-ball
Unlike other holiday resorts along the Costa del Sol, Nerja fascinates with it’s coastline. The mountains (last foothills of the Sierra Almijara) reach the shore. forming majestic cliffs amongst which nestle picturesque coves and beaches.
We advise Torrecilla – Balcon (west to central) for those who wish to stay in a flatter area, no big hills!
If you don’t mind the hills and admire the elevated views, Carabeo – Burriana (central – west) is for you – just incredible views!
Restaurants and bars are easy to come across, a beach-lovers favourite would be one of the may ‘Chiringuitos’ which are the beach-side restaurants specialising in seafood (local may I add!)
The main route to Nerja is the A-7 which runs from Malaga, just 52km away (about a 45 minute drive)
The local authorities have imposed a number of planning restrictions in order to protect the natural heritage from the impact of mass tourism. This keeps Nerja quaint and beautiful. In terms of local buildings and amenities, maximum respect for environmental and Andalusian conditions is adhered to, you will find yourself wandering along pretty streets with whitewashed houses
The pleasant climate, the beauty of the coastline and such tourist attractions as the Nerja Caves combine with the friendliness and hospitality of the local people and the excellent facilities to provide visitors with all the comfort and entertainment they could wish. You can really tailor Nerja to suit YOU – so… what are you waiting for?
A little collage of my visits since 2011 below!
Keep Calm and Think of Nerja
So we’ve heard the weather is miserable in the UK, which is our second home after the beautiful Nerja. Rain all day long? Well we have some fabulous advice to get you through the misery…
It’s simple really – keep calm and think of Nerja!
Whether you’re in experiencing grumpy weather in England, Ireland, Germany or Timbuktu – just day dream off into Nerja. Feel the warm air, sun beating down, feet in the sand and ice cream in hand. Find yourself smiling at the memories!
Nerja is not all that far away, book your tickets and get out here for some much deserved fun and sun – what’s stopping you?
Feria 2014
So very excited for this years Feria – it’s become quite a tradition for us here at RentIn Nerja
This years Feria will be held from Wednesday 9th – 13th October, so not long now!
This will be held in Carabeo/Parador and will mainly be in the ‘Huertos de Carabeo’ car park behind Calle Carabeo. It does stretch out of here and all along to the roundabout at the bottom of Prolong. Rodriguez Acosta (last year this was where the huge dance tent was!)
Click here to see the area of the Feria: http://bit.ly/1x38pSC
Q: What can I expect from this years Feria?
A: Expect live music, bands and entertainment. Many bars and yummy food stalls (we recommend the jacket potato stall – never have I had such a delicious hot potato, traditionally cooked in an outdoor stove!) There will also be many funfair rides for all ages. Don’t forget the fireworks on the first night!
During the day there will be many types of entertainment dotted around Nerja, dancers and music – mainly around Calle Antonio Millon
Look out for the procession taking place around the El Salvador church on the Balcon
Q: Will the Tutti Frutti Plaza be hosting any Feria fun?
A: We’re not 100% sure but they usually do! So if you’re staying on the Torrecilla side of the Balcon – do pop up during the day and night to the Plaza to see what’s happening – Calle Jean
Q: When is the parade?
A: Normally at midday or just after on the Saturday! Get dressed up and go and celebrate with the rest of the town – remember to take lots of photos (send them to us – facebook.com/ilovenerja)

Thankyou to Karin-Isabella O’Connor, Eamonn Fahey and Emmy Austin for sending in your Feria photos of years gone by!
Broken Pool: Capistrano Playa
After a very busy summer on Capistrano Playa during which the pools have been used more than ever and the pumps and installations had to work at their highest capacity for weeks, we had to find that there is dangerous damage to one of the pool pump pipes as well as the chemical injectors of both big pools which are now broken after 20 years of use. They need to be fixed immediately for which it is not possible to keep the two big pools open to the public. We have to close the pools as per TODAY. Both pools must be emptied and the damaged parts repaired. We are aware of the fact that this is very inconvenient for owners, especially those who have rental commitments, but we could not guarantee the security for the users. It won’t be possible to open the pools again this season as the works to be done will take up at least 3 weeks. We apologize for the inconvenience and kindly ask you all to inform your guests and rental agents accordingly.
The staff will prepare a sunbathing area at the children’s splash pool and keep the splash pool open until End of October, so that owners and visitors can enjoy the sun and children can still have fun
Getting to Nerja by Bus
Directions to Nerja by Bus and Coach
Getting there
Once you have passed through the baggage area, as you leave the
airport terminal you will see the bus stop to Malaga in front of you
Catch the bus to Malaga bus station, it is ‘Linea A’ (line A) – this costs
around €2.00 per person. There is a new bus every thirty minutes. The
journey takes twenty
One you get to Malaga bus station you will need the coach to Nerja
You must buy your ticket from Malaga bus station (not on the bus! The
driver may refuse travel) to Nerja from the Alsa ticket office in the main
hall. This has proved to be hard to find at times but if you look at the
information screens, it will tell you which booth to go to for the
destination of Nerja, this now costs around €6.00-€7.00 one way, per
person. Be sure to buy a return if you wish to travel back to the airport
this way – each coach gets booked in advance so you should have a

yourself, it’s the norm to open/close this as you please, including when
you get off
Some coaches are direct and take just one hour, some take between

You will need to get off when the driver calls for Nerja. You will find
yourself at the bus stop which is outlined on this google map: http://bit.ly/1ponYOv
If you need a taxi to get to your accommodation even if it’s via the key
collection place, there are many ready and waiting at the stop
